My Take

Surfer SEO is an all-in-one content intelligence tool, and that gives it a strong edge over Postpace. Its features offer detailed insights and actionable steps to outrank your competitors.

For example, the SERP Analyzer factors in the backlink profile of your competitors’ pages which you need to match or surpass to stand a chance of ranking for competitive keywords. Postpace’s topic report or content audit don’t offer insight on this.

Surfer’s content editor allows you to strategize on how to write content that will rank on Google and optimize a page to boost its ranking.

Postpace doesn’t have a content editor, rather a content audit tool that only focuses on optimizing an already published page. When it comes to language, Surfer supports 70 languages for keyword research while Postpace supports only 14.

Surfer has a free keyword tool which you can add an extension to your browser and the collaboration features are advanced allowing you to invite up to 10 members of your team to work with you.

In addition, it integrates with WordPress, Google Docs, and Jasper AI, a top writing assistant thereby making it easy to write high-quality long-form and short-form content and optimize it with Surfer.

The only advantage Postpace has over Surfer is its affordable pricing. So it’s up to you to choose between affordability and advanced features that will help you outrank your competitors on Google and drive quality traffic.

Below are testimonials from Surfer users on its official Facebook community.

What is Surfer SEO?

Surfer SEO features

Let’s dive into the features of Surfer and what you can use them to achieve.

1. SERP Analyzer

Surfer’s SERP Analyzer automatically fetches and analyzes the top 50 page ranking for a particular keyword. Its advanced nature makes Surfer stand out among its competitors.

When you log in to your dashboard, locate the SERP Analyzer, add your keyword, choose a location, language and click run SERP Analyzer. Within a few seconds, Surfer provides insight and recommendations like what you see below.

A graph shows the word count your content should have to rank on position 1-10 on Google for a keyword. You see a list of the top 50 pages that dominate the search results for your target keyword.

Surfer SEO SERP Analyzer

Beside them are icons representing their various content scores backlink strength and the option to exclude a page from the analysis. There is a shortcut for you to create a content outline, run an audit, paste HTML and take a screenshot.

When you scroll down, you see metrics like:

Common backlinks: Which is a website linking to many of the pages.

Keywords: Which are related terms the top pages also rank for.

Common phrases: Which are groups of words that appear in many of the top-ranking pages.

Popular Phrases: Which are words users mostly search before landing on the top pages.

Questions: What users ask in relation to your keyword.

Prominent words and phrases: They are terms that help Google bots understand your content and can influence ranking.

Surfer provides this insight for you to factor them in when creating or optimizing your content.

2. Content Planner

This feature is useful if you plan to create and rank for head terms like “How to start a blog”. When you enter your pillar topic on Surfer’s content planner, it creates clusters that are sub-topics related to your head term.

Surfer SEO Content Planner

The idea is for you to first write your clusters, publish, and inter-link them. Thereafter you can write your pillar topic, link all the clusters to it and publish it.

That is a content strategy that sends a positive signal to Google algorithm that such page contains all helpful resources that can satisfy user’s intent and therefore should be ranked higher on search results.

3. Audit Tool

You can use the audit tool to improve the ranking of your page on Google. Add your URL and Surfer will analyze and compare it against the top 10 ranking pages for such keywords.

You see your content score in comparison to that of your competitors ranking on top Google search results. Also, you see missing backlinks which simply means websites linking to your competitor’s but you.

Surfer SEO Audit Tool

Backlink is a key ranking factor, especially for competitive keywords. So the idea is to acquire links from the same websites to boost your page ranking.

You get insight into your internal linking structure and that of your competitors to see if there is a need to restructure yours. The audit tool also offers insight on the following:

  • Page structure
  • Word count
  • Exact and partial keywords
  • Time to byte
  • Load time
  • NLPs
  • Meta description and title length

4. Keyword Tool

This feature is free and saves you the money you invest in keyword research tools. It even has a Chrome extension which means you can carry out keyword research directly from your browser. Surfer’s keyword research tool is similar to Keyword Everywhere.

It shows the search volume of the keyword you want to write about and other related keywords in any location.

From the Chrome extension, you can see the monthly organic traffic for each of the websites ranking top for a particular keyword,  and the number of times their focus keyword appeared in their content. When you scroll down, you see an option to generate an outline for the keyword you want to write about.

5. Content Editor

You can plan your content before you write or optimize an existing page using Surfer’s Content Editor. Add the keyword you want and Surfer will  analyze the top pages ranking for such keyword and recommend the structure you should follow when creating your content which includes:

  • Number of headings
  • Word count
  • Number of images
  • Number of paragraphs
Surfer SEO Content Editor

You can enable the NLP to get insight on key terms that influence the ranking of such keyword and customize the structure to exclude pages that are not your competitors.

6. Collaboration

Surfer has advanced collaboration features that allow you to work with your team. You can invite up to 10 members of your team and also share URLs of content without giving them access to your backend.

7. Integration

It integrates with Jasper AI, a top writing assistant to help you write long-form and short-form high-quality content and then optimize it with Surfer. WordPress and Google Docs also connect with Surfer. So you can optimize your content on these platforms without leaving your interface.

8. Customer Support

Surfer has an active Facebook community of 10K plus members and it offers support to its users there. Michael Suski, the co-founder of Surfer, and other team members are happy to help you.

There are plenty of tutorial videos and knowledge-based articles that help you resolve issues yourself.

Postpace Features

Let’s look at what Postpace offers

1. Content Audit

2. Topic Report

Topic report gives a clear understanding of the keyword you want to write and your competitors. To generate a new topic report, add your keyword, choose location and language and hit create a report.

Within a few minutes, Postpace will fetch and analyze the top 50 results from Google. Check your report status to see if it’s ready and, click on view report and you see the following:

  • Average word count for the topic
  • Average readability level ( 10th-12th grade)
  • Average keyword frequency: The average number of times the focus keyword appeared in the top 50 pages.

Next is the competitive analysis of the top 50 ranking pages represented in a graph. You see the following pages grouped in 10s:

  • Word count
  • Number of paragraphs
  • Readability
  • Number of headlines
  • Keyword frequency
  • Number of images
  • Title length
  • Bold words

  • Paragraphs words

You see another report  that analyzes each of the top-ranking 50 pages

The topic report provides insight on their content score, word count, readability, number of times focus keyword was used, images, headlines, and paragraphs on each of the pages. There is an option to view the content on each of the pages.

The outline analysis of each of the top 50 competing pages is next. This simply shows the H tags in each of the pages and how they are structured. The idea is to use it as a guide when creating your outline for the same keyword.

The topic report also shows you the relevant questions users ask about that topic which you should answer in your content. Postpace pulls this data from Quora, Reddit and People Also Ask.

Important NLP phrases and words to use in your content are also in the report including the number of times to use them.

When it comes to optimizing images, Postpace’s topic report lists top Alt texts in the top-ranking pages.

And lastly, the report shows you outbound URLs in the top ranking pages, anchor text, and sources. It also gives an option to add any of the outbound URLs to your content. The idea is for you to add rich and valuable resources to your content to boost its E.A.T.

Postpace supports you to download your report, optimize content and create content brief from the topic report.

3. Content Brief

A content brief is a guideline on how to write a content draft. It is useful if you plan to outsource your writing to freelancers so that both of you will be on the same page. You can create a content brief from the topic report.

Click create a content brief and Postpace will generate a brief based on the keyword you entered in the topic report.
