I have bought items from Amazon and will show you how you too can shop for items on  Amazon in minutes and have your items delivered to your location in Australia. Towards the end, I will answer all questions you ask about Amazon Australia so you won’t be confused with anything.

Does that sound interesting? If yes, continue to read.

What is Amazon Australia?

Amazon Australia is a version of Amazon, the multinational American technology company with a focus on ecommerce, artificial intelligence, digital streaming, etc. It is an online retail store where Australian residents can shop for items they want, pay, and have them delivered to their locations in Australia. So instead of going to Amazon.com to shop items from sellers across the world, you can do that on Amazon.au which has mainly Australian sellers and buyers.

How does Amazon Australia work?

This works this way: Australian residents who want to shop for items go to Amazon.au to look for items they want to buy. Sellers on Amazon Australia have already listed these items on the store for them to order, pay and have it delivered to their location in Australia. Unlike Amazon.com where you pay for items in the United States dollars, items on Amazon Australia are sold in the Australian currency- the Australian dollar.

How to shop on Amazon Australia as an Australian resident

Now you understand what Amazon Australia is and how it works, let’s proceed to how you can buy the items you want.

Step 1: Sign up to create an account

This is the first step to buying a product on Amazon Australia. Visit Amazon.com.au, on the homepage, click on Sign-in and you will be directed to a new page where you create an account. You can Sign-in if you have an existing account. Check the box Create Account.

Fill in the following accurately:

  • First and last name
  • Mobile number or email address ( email address is preferable)
  • Create a password ( a strong password minimum of 6 characters)

Click Continue and you will receive an email asking you to verify your account. Once you verify, congratulations! Your Amazon.au account is created and you can start shopping for products.

Step 2: Find items you want to by browsing different departments

Amazon Australia has various departments for items( it is called categories on Amazon Canada). You can see it on the homepage if you are using your PC to shop. Browse the departments to find the department where the item you want to order will likely be.

Let’s see the top departments on Amazon.au

  • Computer
  • Homes
  • Books
  • Electronics

The above departments are where Australian residents often buy items from. Amazon displays it to help you find what you want easily. You also see what is trending.

For instance, you want to buy a smart TV. The best department to look for it is electronics. When you click on it you will see featured categories in the electronics department which include TV, Home Cinema, and Video. The same applies if you are looking for tablets.

Another method to find a product on Amazon Australia which I consider the easiest is the use of the search bar. It is most suitable when you have a product in mind. On the homepage, navigate to the search bar and enter the name of the product you are looking for. Click the search icon and in seconds, you will see results showing the products you want to buy or the ones that relate to it.

For instance: I  want to buy a  smartwatch and I enter it in the search bar and click search. The screenshot below is what I got.

If you take a closer look at the title of all the items that appeared on the result, they all have smartwatches. Even the photos confirm what they are.

Step 3: Explore the products

After picking an item from the results Amazon Australia shows you, next is to explore it.

Firstly,  check if the product is still in stock so that you don’t waste your time on a product that is already sold out.

Look at the price tag to see if you have the budget. If yes, checkout the photos of the item from all angles. Sellers on Amazon upload many photos of their items. Swipe to view them all.

Read the description of the product and in the case of electronics like smart TV,  check their specifications to ensure it meets your requirements. Look at the brand name and confirm the item is from a well-known brand.

Check the ratings. An  Item with 4.5-star ratings and above is okay. It shows that previous buyers are satisfied with it. Read  reviews from other Australians that ordered

the same item.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see these reviews. Many sellers add frequently asked questions and also answer them to satisfy your curiosity about the item you want to buy.

Step 4: Set your preferences

Set your preferences if everything looks fine and you’re convinced the product is worth your money. The preference I mean here is color, size, and others as they apply to the item. Bear in mind that the price of an item may increase when you set the size, and color you want.

For example, the price of Gucci men’s shoe ( size 46 & color black) may be different from the same design of Gucci men’s shoe ( size 40 & color brown)

Step 5: Find out about the shipping time

The estimated period of delivery or shipping is shown below the price tag of the item. Sellers on Amazon Australia offer two types of delivery:

  • Fastest delivery
  • Free delivery

If you are in a hurry to have the product, choose the fastest delivery and a small shipping fee will be charged. The product arrives at your location in Australia within 2 days.

Choose free delivery if it isn’t urgent. It usually takes 5 working days to receive it at your location. This may vary, so it’s important you check the shipping duration for the item and decide if you are okay with it.

Step 6: Add to cart

At this stage, you add the product you want to cart. If you want to buy more items, go ahead and keep adding them to cart. Even if you don’t pay instantly, you can return at a later time and continue from where you stopped.

Amazon will send a reminder email after some hours to encourage you to complete the purchase process you started. You can remove an item you initially added to cart and replace it with another item.

After adding an item to cart, you will see ” Item added to cart” in green text. You also see the subtotal of the item. Next is to click on Proceed to Checkout if you are done shopping.

Step 7: Add your delivery information

Here, you provide details of your location in Australia where Amazon will deliver the item.

Fill in the following:

Full name: This should be the name you used to create an Amazon Australia account. It can be the name on your Facebook, Apple, or Google accounts if you used any of them to create an account.

Address Line 1: This is your main address. It can be your resident address.

Address Line 2: This is an alternative address to which your order can be delivered in the event your first address can’t be identified.

City: This is the town in which your address line 1 or 2 falls

Zip Code

Country: Australia

Phone number

State/ Region/ Province: Examples are Queensland, Northern Territory, South Australia, etc.

Optional delivery preference

Amazon recently introduced this method of delivery to ensure that your item is delivered to your location even if you aren’t available to receive it. You provide Amazon Australia access code to your apartment if you have any.

The delivery man will come into your apartment and deliver your item. You enter the access code in the space meant for it. You are required to choose if the address where the item will be shipped is the same as the address your bills come from.

Double-check the information you provided to be sure there are no mistakes. Click Continue

Step 8: Pay for items

Your purchase process isn’t complete until you pay for the items you added to cart. Amazon Australia has various payment methods you can use:

  • Credit and debit cards
  • Amazon gift cards
  • PayPal

Do the following if you want to pay with a credit card:

  • Enter the name on your credit card
  • Enter your card number
  • Enter the expiration date for your card
  • Tap on Add your card and the credit card will automatically be selected as the payment option
  • Click Continue

If you prefer PayPal, click on PayPal and your PayPal account will be connected as a payment option. Then enter your password.

If you have an Australian Amazon gift card, you can apply it. Firstly, redeem it and enter the code on the gift card section which you can see at the bottom of the homepage.

Step 9: Confirm the order

Review your order on the next screen. You can make changes such as replacing the initial shipping address you added, choosing another size and color of the item, etc.  Click Place Your Order if everything looks good.

Amazon sends you a confirmation email immediately.

Congratulations!  you have ordered an item on Amazon Australia. Wait for the product to arrive at your address.
